Lampang is a provincial city in northern Thailand that retains a slower pace than neighbouring Chiang Mai, partly preserved by having avoided the same degree of tourist development. The city is distinctive for its horse-drawn carriage taxis, which remain in operation and have become a local symbol. Several notable Lanna temples survive, including Wat Phra That Lampang Luang — one of the most complete surviving examples of Lanna temple architecture — situated about 18 kilometres south of the city. The Wang River runs through the centre.
