Chiang Dao is a district in northern Chiang Mai Province dominated by the Doi Chiang Dao massif, whose principal peak reaches 2,195 metres, making it the third-highest in Thailand. The mountain is a limestone complex containing a cave system — Tham Chiang Dao — that extends several kilometres into the rock and is partially accessible by guided tour. The surrounding area is a sanctuary for highland bird species and is visited by ornithologists from across Asia. The valley below supports traditional small-scale farming communities.
