Mae Hong Son is the principal town of the remote province of the same name, which shares a long border with Myanmar's Shan State. The town is set in a valley surrounded by forested ridges and is known for two Burmese-style temples, Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang, reflected in the lake beside them at dawn — one of the most photographed morning scenes in northern Thailand. The province as a whole is home to diverse ethnic communities including Shan, Karen, and Palong peoples. Access from Chiang Mai is either by a winding mountain road or a short domestic flight.
