Pai is a small town in a broad mountain valley in Mae Hong Son Province, roughly 135 kilometres northwest of Chiang Mai via a road of 762 curves. The surrounding landscape combines rice paddies, bamboo forests, hot springs, and hill tribe villages. The town itself has developed a distinct counterculture and backpacker character while retaining accessible day-trip options to Chinese settlement villages, waterfalls, and the canyon at Pai Yai. In cool season, morning mist over the valley creates atmospheric conditions sought by photographers.
