Doi Suthep is a mountain rising immediately to the west of Chiang Mai, its summit at 1,676 metres occupied by Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of the most venerated temples in northern Thailand. The temple's gilded chedi is visible from the city below on clear days, and the terrace around it provides a panoramic view over the Chiang Mai valley. Access is via a paved road and a naga-flanked staircase of 306 steps, or by a funicular tramway. The mountain lies within Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.
