The only tropical rainforest island in the eastern Pacific, Cocos lies 550 kilometres off Costa Rica, where it catches the northern equatorial counter-current and becomes a natural laboratory for studying how island and ocean interact. Divers rate its wall-and-cave seascape among the world's finest for watching sharks, rays, tuna and dolphins in numbers. UNESCO inscribed Cocos Island National Park as a natural World Heritage Site in 1997.
