The Similan Islands form an archipelago of nine granite islands about 84 kilometres offshore from the Phang Nga coast in the Andaman Sea. The islands are protected within Mu Ko Similan National Park and are widely regarded as hosting some of the finest dive sites in Southeast Asia, with visibility commonly exceeding 30 metres. Boulders of smooth rounded granite define the beaches above water and continue below the surface, creating unusual underwater topography. The park is closed during monsoon season and accessible by liveaboard vessel or day trip from Khao Lak.
