Where forest is slowly reclaiming ancient savanna, Odzala-Kokoua preserves that recolonization on a rare and enormous scale, a meeting place of Congolese forest, Lower Guinean forest and grassland whose patchwork of forest ages makes for unusually rich ecology. The massif is one of Central Africa's great refuges for forest elephants and holds the region's most diverse assembly of primates. UNESCO inscribed the Forest Massif of Odzala-Kokoua in 2023.
