The only coralline island in Taiwan (as opposed to volcanic), Xiaoliuqiu sits 15 kilometres off the Pingtung coast and is encircled by a shallow reef teeming with sea turtles — sightings on snorkelling or diving excursions are reliably frequent by regional standards. The island's interior is a compact landscape of coral limestone formations, while a 12-kilometre road loops the perimeter past marine biology stations and village settlements.
