An archipelago of 36 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait just kilometres from the Fujian coast, the Matsu Islands are Taiwan's northernmost jurisdiction and among its most culturally distinctive. Military fortifications from the Cold War-era cross-strait conflict have been repurposed into tourist sites, while traditional Minnan architecture in the villages of Beigan and Nangan, and the bioluminescent blue tears phenomenon visible in summer on Nangan's shoreline, constitute the islands' main attractions.
