Also known as Orchid Island, Lanyu is a volcanic island 62 kilometres southeast of Taitung that is home to the Tao (Yami) indigenous people, who maintain a distinctive material culture centred on elaborately decorated wooden fishing canoes. The island's steep interior ridges, coral shoreline, and turquoise lagoons provide dramatic natural scenery, while strict cultural protocols limiting tourism development have preserved an environment fundamentally different from the Taiwanese mainland.
