Centred on Yu Shan — at 3,952 metres the highest peak in Northeast Asia outside of the Himalayas — this protected area of 1,050 square kilometres spans a dramatic elevational gradient from 300 metres to the summit. The main summit trail involves a two-day ascent with a mid-mountain hut, passing through subtropical and temperate forest zones into a barren rocky alpine environment with views reaching the Pacific on clear mornings.
