A high mountain recreation area in the Central Range at approximately 2,200 metres, Alishan is most celebrated for its sea of clouds at dawn and for the historic narrow-gauge forest railway that climbs from Chiayi through subtropical to temperate forest zones. Sacred cypress forests, cherry blossoms in late March, and a viewpoint at Zhushan that faces the sunrise over a tier of mountain ridges are its defining features.
