Taiwan's largest body of fresh water, Sun Moon Lake occupies a high basin in the central mountains at 748 metres elevation, its surface divided conceptually into a sun-shaped eastern section and a crescent moon-shaped western section. Forested hillsides ringed by traditional Thao aboriginal settlements, Taoist temples on lakeshore promontories, and a scenic bicycle route circling the 33-kilometre perimeter make it the island's pre-eminent inland resort.
