National Archeological Park of Tierradentro

Deep beneath the hills of the northern Andes, the builders of Tierradentro hollowed out monumental underground tombs — hypogea whose burial chambers can span 12 metres — and painted their walls with the red-and-black geometric patterns that once decorated their homes. Standing statues of human figures rise nearby. Cut between the 6th and 10th centuries, they reveal a socially complex pre-Hispanic culture. UNESCO inscribed the National Archeological Park of Tierradentro in 1995.
