Central China's largest surviving primary forests cloak Shennongjia, split between the Shennongding/Badong and Laojunshan tracts in Hubei. Botanists have prized the region since the international plant-collecting expeditions of the 19th and 20th centuries, and its woods still hide the Chinese giant salamander, the golden snub-nosed monkey, clouded and common leopards and the Asian black bear. UNESCO inscribed Hubei Shennongjia on the World Heritage List in 2016.
