The Hanging Temple (Xuankong Si) near Datong is a Buddhist monastery built into a cliff face above the Shili River gorge, supported by wooden columns projecting from the rock. Dating originally to the Northern Wei dynasty, the temple is remarkable for synthesizing Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian shrines within a single suspended complex. The approach from the gorge floor reveals the structure cantilevered 75 metres above the riverbed.
