A high-altitude alpine lake at 3,600 metres along the Karakoram Highway in southern Xinjiang, Karakul is set against the glaciated faces of Muztagh Ata and Kongur Tagh. The lake surface reflects the snowfields and scree slopes above on calm mornings. Kirghiz nomads camp on the lakeshore and yurt accommodation is available. The drive along the Karakoram Highway through this landscape is among the most scenic mountain roads in Asia.
