A deep glacial lake in the Altai Mountains of northern Xinjiang near the Mongolian and Russian borders, Kanas is surrounded by taiga forest populated by Tuvan nomads. The lake is colored turquoise-jade by glacial flour in suspension. An elevated wooden viewing platform on Observation Fish Hill above the lake frames the lake surface, forested mountains, and river valley in a single composition. Autumn colour in September is exceptional.
