Located in a depression 154 metres below sea level in the Xinjiang desert, Turpan is one of the hottest and driest places in China and the site of the ancient Silk Road city-states of Gaochang and Jiaohe. The ruins of Jiaohe — a cliff-top city abandoned in the fourteenth century — are well preserved and walkable. Grape cultivation using ancient karez underground water channels forms the town's agricultural identity.
