Carved into a red sandstone cliff at the confluence of three rivers near Leshan city, this Tang dynasty Maitreya figure stands 71 metres tall and remains the world's largest stone Buddha sculpture. The statue faces the confluence where the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers meet, and was commissioned specifically to calm dangerous currents. The full figure is best seen from tourist boats on the river below.
