Seated on a high plateau at 3,300 metres in northwestern Yunnan, Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) is a Tibetan town anchored by the large Ganden Sumtseling Monastery complex visible from across the valley. The surrounding highland meadows bloom with wildflowers in early summer and the winter air is exceptionally clear. The old quarter preserves traditional Tibetan architecture alongside active temples.
