One of the oldest and best-preserved of the Yangtze Delta water towns, Zhouzhuang is threaded by a canal network crossed by twin-arch stone bridges, most famously the Shuangqiao double bridge. Ming and Qing dynasty merchant houses reflect in dark canal water alongside flat-bottomed gondolas. The town is compact enough to cover on foot in a single day.
