Altit Fort is a fortified tower complex perched on a sheer cliff above the Hunza River in the village of Altit, approximately four kilometres from Karimabad, and is regarded as the oldest surviving structure in Gilgit-Baltistan with portions dated to around 900 years ago. The fort served as the residence of the Mirs of Hunza before they moved to Baltit Fort upstream. Restoration completed in 2008 preserved original wooden balconies and carved interior pillars. The cliff-edge position above the Hunza River gorge provides dramatic valley views.
