Namtso (Nam Co) is the second-largest saltwater lake in China and one of the highest large lakes in the world, situated at 4,718 metres on the Tibetan plateau north of Lhasa. The lake is 70 kilometres long and bounded to the south by the Nyenchen Tanglha mountain range, whose glaciated peaks rise steeply from the lakeshore. Tashi Dor peninsula hosts an ancient monastery accessible by a walk across the lake's southeastern shoreline. The lake's deep blue colour and the surrounding open tundra and snow peaks make it an exceptional landscape photography setting.
