K2 is the world's second-highest mountain at 8,611 metres, located on the China-Pakistan border in the Karakoram range and regarded by mountaineers as the most technically demanding of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks. The mountain's near-perfect pyramid profile, seen from the Baltoro Glacier approach, is one of the most iconic mountain forms in the world. The standard approach from Skardu via Askole and the Baltoro Glacier takes approximately seven days of trekking. The peak was first climbed in 1954 by an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio.
