The Karakoram Highway is an engineering landmark completed in 1978 running approximately 1,300 kilometres from Hasan Abdal in Punjab to the Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 metres on the Chinese border. The road traverses some of the most extreme mountain terrain in the world, following the Indus and Hunza rivers through gorges flanked by Himalayan, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush ranges. Stretches near Besham, Chilas, and the Rakaposhi viewpoint at Minapin are consistently cited as among the most dramatic road journeys in Asia.
