Bumthang is a collective name for four high valleys in central Bhutan — Choskhor, Tang, Ura, and Chhume — often described as the cultural and spiritual heartland of the country. The district contains a concentration of important temples and monasteries, including Jambay Lhakhang (7th century) and Kurjey Lhakhang, as well as the oldest operating brewery in Bhutan. At elevations between 2,600 and 3,500 metres the valleys produce buckwheat, apples, and honey, and the landscape transitions between temperate forest and open glacial meadow.
