Bhaktapur is a medieval Newari city in the eastern Kathmandu Valley, largely preserved as a heritage zone with brick-paved courtyards, tiered pagoda temples, and carved wooden monuments dating from the 12th to 17th centuries. Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, and Pottery Square each form distinct architectural ensembles that sustained heavy damage in the 2015 earthquake but have been substantially restored. The city is known for its production of traditional ceramics, thangka paintings, and the fermented yogurt drink juju dhau.
