Mustang is a remote trans-Himalayan district in northern Nepal that forms part of the former Kingdom of Lo, retaining strong Tibetan cultural traditions including walled medieval towns, cave monasteries, and distinctive mud-brick architecture set against an arid plateau landscape. The Upper Mustang region, centred on the walled city of Lo Manthang, requires a special restricted-area permit. The eroded red and ochre cliffs carved with ancient cave dwellings are a visually distinctive feature of the landscape.
