Hulhumale is a reclaimed island adjacent to Male International Airport, constructed in phases since the 1990s to address the Maldives' acute land shortage and provide housing capacity for the growing capital population. Its wide straight beaches and shallow turquoise lagoon are easily accessible from Male without a speedboat, making it the most practical day-beach option for travellers transiting through or based in the capital. The island represents a contemporary chapter in Maldivian settlement alongside the historic atolls.
