Canals thread the lanes of Lijiang, fed by an ancient water-supply system so ingenious that it still works today. Moulded to uneven terrain at an old commercial and strategic crossroads, the town survives with rare authenticity, its architecture weaving together the traditions of the several cultures — the Naxi among them — that met here over the centuries. UNESCO inscribed the Old Town of Lijiang in 1997.
