High in the Talamanca range between Costa Rica and Panama, traces of Ice Age glaciers score peaks that rise above one of Central America's largest expanses of tropical rainforest. Because the isthmus bridges two continents, plants and animals of North and South American origin mingle here in extraordinary variety, and several Indigenous peoples maintain territories within the reserves. Managed cooperatively by the two countries, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
