Arugam Bay is a curved bay on Sri Lanka's east coast, internationally regarded as one of the premier right-hand surf breaks in South Asia, with Main Point producing consistent long-period swells between May and September. Outside the surf season the bay reverts to a quiet fishing village, and the lagoon to the south hosts a population of wild elephants and wading birds that move through the shoreline vegetation. The relatively remote location on the east coast — historically less developed than the southwest — makes it less crowded than comparable coastal towns.
