Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's second-largest national park and the most visited, occupying the southeastern corner of the island where dry scrub forest, coastal lagoons, and rocky outcrops support one of the world's highest densities of wild leopards per unit area. The park is divided into five blocks, with Block 1 carrying the highest wildlife concentration and the most jeep traffic. Elephant, sloth bear, sambar, water buffalo, and large saltwater crocodiles round out the primary large mammal assemblage.
