Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's highest town at 1,868 metres, built by British planters in a style that transplanted colonial aesthetics — pitched tile roofs, manicured hedgerows, a racecourse, and a golf course — into the core of the country's tea-producing region. The surrounding Dimbula and Uva tea districts, draped across the hills on all sides, represent a significant share of Ceylon tea production. Lake Gregory at the town's centre provides a foreground for the ring of hills and is used for pedal boating and lakeside walks.
