Adam's Peak, locally known as Sri Pada, is a conical mountain in the Ratnapura district rising to 2,243 metres and revered simultaneously by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians as the site of a sacred footprint attributed respectively to the Buddha, Shiva, Adam, and St. Thomas. The pilgrim trail ascends approximately 5,500 steps to the summit, and pre-dawn climbers are rewarded at sunrise with a triangular shadow cast by the peak itself across the surrounding lowland clouds — a spectacle unique to the mountain's geometry. The pilgrimage season runs from December to May.
