Four tracts — Tomur, Kalajun-Kuerdening, Bayinbukuke and Bogda — carry the World Heritage flag for the Tianshan, one of the planet's largest mountain systems. Across 606,833 hectares, glacier-hung peaks drop through undisturbed forests and meadows to clear rivers, lakes and red-bed canyons, while the burning Taklimakan presses close below: a collision of hot and cold, desolate and lush, preserved since the Pliocene. UNESCO inscribed Xinjiang Tianshan in 2013.
