Red sandstone sculpted by uplift, weathering and water gives the Danxia landscapes their fire-coloured cliffs, towers, ravines and waterfalls. Six areas across sub-tropical south-west China make up the serial property, their rugged terrain sheltering broad-leaved evergreen forests and around 400 rare or threatened species of plants and animals. UNESCO inscribed China Danxia on the World Heritage List in 2010, lending a Chinese term to geology worldwide.
