Among the first wetland sites designated under the Ramsar Convention and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Djoudj Sanctuary in the Senegal River delta is one of the world's most significant wintering grounds for Palearctic waterbirds. Over three million birds, including the world's third-largest breeding colony of great white pelicans, use the park's shallow lakes, channels, and marshes. The sanctuary lies at the northern edge of the Sahel and the first substantial wetland south of the Sahara for birds migrating from Europe and northern Asia.
