From 277 BC to AD 668 the Koguryo dynasty ruled lands spanning northern China and the upper Korean Peninsula, and this property preserves its power centres on the Chinese side: the mountain strongholds of Wunu and Wandu, Guonei City within modern Ji'an, and 40 tombs of rulers and nobles. Several burial chambers display ingenious corbelled ceilings engineered to bear massive mounds of stone and earth. UNESCO inscribed the capital cities and tombs in 2004.
