A limestone plateau in northern Madagascar riddled with deep canyons, underground rivers, and large cave systems, Ankarana shelters populations of Perrier's sifaka, crowned lemurs, and Nile crocodiles inhabiting the underground lakes. The surface tsingy formations are smaller than those at Bemaraha but more accessible, and the canyon circuits can be completed in a single day. The Ankarana massif rises dramatically from the surrounding dry forest as a near-vertical cliff face.
