Tofo Beach near Inhambane in southern Mozambique is one of the continent's most celebrated diving destinations, with the waters off the headland renowned for consistent whale shark encounters year-round and large aggregations of manta rays. The broad, gently curved beach of fine white sand faces the warm Mozambique Channel, and the village's laid-back character has made it a long-established backpacker and surf destination. Humpback whale sightings from the beach are common between July and October.
