The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the second-largest game reserve in the world at over 52,000 square kilometres, covering a significant portion of the Kalahari Desert. In the summer rainy season, the reserve's fossil riverbeds and grasslands fill with wildebeest, gemsbok, and eland, attracting the so-called 'Black-maned Kalahari lions'. The reserve's extreme remoteness ensures that visitor numbers remain low, preserving an austere desert wilderness.
