The Naukluft Mountains form the eastern border of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, a rugged plateau of limestone and quartzite cut by deep gorges and perennial springs that sustain Hartmann's mountain zebra and klipspringer on its rocky slopes. The Naukluft hiking trail is a demanding eight-day loop through the mountain plateau, rated among the most challenging wilderness hikes in Namibia. The springs support riverine vegetation that contrasts starkly with the surrounding desert.
