Cape Cross on the Skeleton Coast hosts one of the largest colonies of Cape fur seals on earth, with estimates placing the population at more than 100,000 animals at peak breeding season. The site is also of historical significance as the landing point of the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão in 1486, marked today by a replica stone cross. The spectacle and sound of the densely packed colony is overwhelming in scale, and predators including brown hyena and black-backed jackal are regularly seen along the colony margins.
