The Cape Winelands centred on Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl encompass more than 200 estates producing some of Africa's finest wines against a backdrop of dramatic mountain ranges. Dutch East India Company gable architecture lines the oak-shaded streets of Stellenbosch, while Franschhoek — founded by Huguenot refugees — preserves its French heritage in village streetscapes and estate names. The scenic mountain passes between the valleys, including Franschhoek Pass, are among the Western Cape's finest drives.
