Knysna sits on a lagoon that opens to the Indian Ocean through a narrow channel flanked by the famous Heads — two sandstone cliffs that frame one of South Africa's most photographed seascapes. The surrounding forests are among the last remnants of Afrotemperate forest in the country and shelter a small population of Knysna elephants. The waterfront and Thesen Islands offer a relaxed base for exploring the central Garden Route.
