The southwestern extremity of the Cape Peninsula rises as sheer cliffs above the churning waters where Atlantic swells batter the headland. Part of the Table Mountain National Park, Cape Point shelters Cape mountain zebra, bontebok, and ostrich on its fynbos-covered plateau. The Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias rounded this cape in 1488, and the ruined beacon of the old lighthouse is a striking landmark.
