Akagera occupies Rwanda's northeastern savanna along the Tanzania border, a landscape of rolling hills, lakes, and papyrus swamps that was heavily poached in the 1990s but has since undergone a remarkable wildlife recovery. Lions and black rhinos have been reintroduced, and the park now supports all of the Big Five as well as substantial herds of elephants, topis, and roan antelopes. The Akagera river system and its chain of lakes — including Lake Ihema — provide excellent birding from boat safari with regular shoebill stork sightings.
